Ron Cassell's 1959 Corvette

Started on Baritone bugle, then Soprano. Also played trombone in Keesler Kommanders dance band. Marched under three Drum Majors: Johnson, Max Shultz and Ian Glenday, and made lifelong friends. Radar maintenance 30332 in school.

All the years back !!!

I had played trumpet in Middle and High School and some afterwards, so when I joined AF in '71 and my first assignment was to Keesler AFB I immediately found the Blue Knights. After an incredible 72 hours (do they still do that?) I had a blast and would have continued, but got a re-assignment and moved to Chanute IL. The time I did play, was extremely memorable. Thanks for creating this site. My best to y'all.

Not a ditty bop but I did at least learn that "HIT IT" ( other than SOS it is the only code I know)
Baritone bugle and quartermaster latter part of year and helped with clean up of Hurricane Fredrick... Loved the vets at Pascagula that worked with us during that trying time. Keesler was my Avionics Training base. Some of the times are sketchy due to a special place called "Maws" just out the back gate ( if i even remember the name correctly). I will look for some pics that survived my own fire in 1982 and post them sometime.

I passed my room inspection and got my rope when Buddy Colangelo was head of the drum line in May of '67. I think Ron Francois took over soon after.

Names I remember from the Corps other than Buddy and Ron are Jerry McCants (baritone horn) who ended up in Misawa Japan with me, Jim Garrett (soprano horn) from California (I think his dad worked for Bechtel out of San Francisco), a guy named “Puckett” who brought moonshine back with him when he went home on leave (he used to get drunk and fall asleep in the shower with the water running using a big sponge for a pillow), a guy named Clay (I think he was a bass drummer) from NYC and Mac our OIC. I think the Corps Sweetheart was named Connie at the time.
Lt. Macintosh had an apartment in a house down by the Gulf where we had a few parties. I dated a girl who lived downstairs from him for a while. That was a little strange.

I marched at the VFW Nationals the summer of 1967 and remember that the guy who played the "Call to Colors" (don't remember his name) had his slide out too far and did the whole thing off key.

I have some pictures from the period when we changed from the white helmets with the thick blue stripe to the shako and will attach them to the site if I can find them. (I liked the helmets and thought the shakos looked stupid with our uniforms).

Lastly, I remember the Keesler Male Chorus warming up across the quad in the evenings singing obscenely lewd lines, in perfect harmony, that I won't repeat here.

I remember my time with the drum and bugle corp very well. Was in fact the Corp commander. I loved it and miss it very much!!! Still have a few pictures. I hope the missle and helmet are still there!!! lol

The best part of Keesler! I started in the old 2-story wood barracks and moved to the dorm near the BX (by the east gate closest to the shore). Only did four years in the AF, then the private sector, then engineering school, then hired on as an AF civilian. Now working for NORAD and US Northern Command in Colorado Springs. I have tons of photos I need to scan and post--someday? Thanks for the site and memories.

Best of times, great friends, stairwell parties, practice, cleaning the base theater after movies to watch free movies, going for your rope during the weekend, "Hit it Boot!, Academic Advisor - counseling tower flowers because they lost their aircraft that day, because we couldn't say "forget", we had to rename a movie that weekend " The Land that Slipped Times Mind". Loved it. Great site, when I get out of Afghanistan, I plan on adding some pictures! Brought back memories when I visited my son at Keesler AFB while he attended Fundies for Integrated Avionics on C-17s. Awesome!

I joined the Blue Knights two weeks after arriving at Keesler AFB in Sep 1965. 1Lt Jerry Williams was OIC, Kathy was the Corps Sweetheart, Rogers was the Guideon and little Larry Strawn was the Drum Sergeant. I spent almost a year in the Corps with a great bunch of guys. The years have faded my memory of most of the guys' names, but I do still recall Kent Cummings (horn) and Mike Nelson (tenor drum). After Keesler, I went on to serve a 30 year career, retiring in 1995. My time in the D&B always has been one of my most memorable Air Force experiences.
